This third edition provides an introduction to sociological research on ethnicity and migration issues in Sweden. Contributing authors have updated their contributions. Eight new chapters of great topicality have been included, including one on anti-Muslim racism (Islamophobia) and its consequences. The book consists of three parts. Part I addresses the theory of ethnic relations in relation to social stratification, integration and power relations. Part II highlights the conditions for the five national minorities in Sweden. Part III describes Swedish immigration and refugee policy, and the situation of unaccompanied young people. It also deals with discrimination in the labor market, housing segregation, crime, migration and health, honor, gender equality and masculinity, as well as the media's construction of immigrants.

In several sectors of working life, foreign-born wage workers testify to difficulties such as racist customers or care recipients, glitches from colleagues, unjustified wage differences and high demands on Swedish skills, while multilingualism is not considered an advantage.

On July 22, 2011, Ali Esbati was on Utøya to give a lecture at AUF's summer camp. He became one of those who survived the terrorist attack by Anders Behring Breivik. The book tells in detail the dramatic events that turned out to be the bloodiest terrorist attack in Nordic history since World War II. The terrorist attack was a deliberate political act, based on a right-wing extremist ideology that existed before the attack and which also lives on after the perpetrator was imprisoned. It is in itself an expression of a larger movement that affects the entire political landscape in the western world.
The book is a political story with a personal tone. It addresses the changes in the climate of debate, tendencies towards dehumanization in matters of immigration and integration, and reflects on the social significance of these. By weaving together the events on Utøya with Ali's personal story, as well as reflections on the time we live in ten years later, the book is a contribution both to remember and to collectively deal with the tragedy on 22 July.

BIOGRAFhy
America Vera-Zavala är dramatiker, författare och debattör. Hon blev tidigt känd som politisk aktivist inom rörelsen för global rättvisa. Hon har skrivit flera böcker om demokrati och globalisering och medverkade i Lars Noréns projekt Den polske rörmokaren, vilket resulterade i hennes debutpjäs, Concha Tu Madre.

During this book release professor Kristina Boréus (IBF) will discuss her latest book, Migrants and Natives (Sage, 2021) together with initiated scholars in the field.
In her new book "Migrants and Natives" (Sage, 2020), political scientist Kristina Boréus explores hostile and anti-immigration rhetoric in contemporary European politics. Topical and timely, the book guides the reader through the trajectories of radical right parties and contextualizes discriminatory rhetoric in wider immigration and integration politics.
In this book launch, Boréus discusses "Migrants and Natives" with political scientist Karin Borevi from Södertörn University.
Kristina Boréus is Professor of Political Science at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research, Uppsala University. Her research interests include ideology studies, right-wing populism and discourse-analysis.
Karin Borevi is Associate Professor of Political Science at the Department of Political Science, Södertörn University. Her research interests include studies of immigration, citizenship and multiculturalism.

Alltsedan den internationella romska medborgarrättsrörelsen tog form i Paris kosmopolitiska miljö efter andra världskrigets slut har upprättelse, medborgarrätt och kamp mot antiziganism varit dess gemensamma nämnare. Jan Selling visar i sin aktuella bok hur romska utomparlamentariska aktioner uppstått och verkat, liksom hur avkoloniseringen av romska studier sker och hur romska intellektuella själva äntrar scenen. Hur ser då denna frigörelses förutsättningar ut i Sverige och i andra länder? Det är en av de frågor som diskuteras här. Den aktuella tiggeridebatten belyses likaså. Centralt för analysen är begreppet historisk rättvisa, ett koncept som på senare år fått allt större betydelse även i Sverige.

UNDOING HOMOGENEITY IN THE NORDIC REGION

Suvi Keskinen, Professor and an Academy Research Fellow in the Centre for Research on Ethnic Relations and Nationalism (CEREN) at the University of Helsinki, Finland. She is the co-editor of Complying with Colonialism. Gender, Race and Ethnicity in the Nordic Region.
This book critically engages with dominant ideas of cultural homogeneity in the Nordic countries and contests the notion of homogeneity as a crucial determinant of social cohesion and societal security. Showing how national identities in the Nordic region have developed historically around notions of cultural and racial homogeneity, it exposes the varied histories of migration and the longstanding presence of ethnic minorities and indigenous people in the region that are ignored in dominant narratives. With attention to the implications of notions of homogeneity for the everyday lives of migrants and racialised minorities in the region, as well as the increasing securitisation of those perceived not to be part of the homogenous nation, this volume provides detailed analyses of how welfare state policies, media, and authorities seek to manage and govern cultural, religious, and racial differences. With studies of national minorities, indigenous people and migrants in the analysis of homogeneity and difference, it sheds light on the agency of minorities and the intertwining of securitisation policies with notions of culture, race, and religion in the government of difference. As such it will appeal to scholars and students in social sciences and humanities with interests in race and ethnicity, migration, postcolonialism, Nordic studies, multiculturalism, citizenship, and belonging.

Ortenrörelsen är det samlande namnet på den mobilisering som nu sker i stigmatiserade bostadsområden runt om i hela Sverige. För mer än hundra år sedan ställde den svenska arbetarklassen krav på rösträtt och anständiga livsvillkor. Vid sidan av fackföreningar och politiska partier skapades också en folkbildande och kulturpolitisk rörelse som syftade till att ge upprättelse och ingjuta mod i de grupper som vid denna tid kämpade för att bli en del av samhället. I dag höjer förortsvärlden sina röster och ställer krav på fördelningspolitik och på att bli betraktade som fullvärdiga medborgare. På ett motsvarande sätt som i början av det förra seklet sker det idag parallellt med de politiska kraven en organisering runt sökandet efter den kunskap och bildning som kan stärka självkänslan och ge vägledning åt kampen för ett rättvist samhälle. Denna bok handlar om bakgrunden till och framväxten av denna nya förortsmobilisering, Ortenrörelsen.

Per-Erik Nilsson takes a religious studies approach to analyse the intersections of secularism, nationhood and populism in contemporary France. This book provides insight into the French and European radical-nationalist ideology and activism, and contributes to our understanding of the complex relationship between religion and the state in contemporary Europe and beyond.
When Marine Le Pen became the leader of the radical nationalist and populist party National Front in 2011, she made clear that secularism was a core value of party. This signalled a significant shift in the party's rhetorical strategies and previous reluctance to embrace secularism. Nilsson argues that this conspicuous appropriation first came about as a logical result of the obsession of the established mainstream political parties and news media with questions of secularism, national identity and Islam. He shows that a key player in understanding the National Front's change is the web-based journal Riposte Laïque, which has become a central actor in French radical-nationalist and anti-Muslim web and street-based activism. For the first time, this source is examined in order to understand French radical nationalists' recent appropriation of secularism, as well as debates on secularism, national identity and Islam in France more broadly. Theorizing Nordic Nations as constituent partners of Black Europe and the African Diaspora

Stephen Small, Professor of African American Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Small has taught in the Department of African American Studies since 1994. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, (1989); his MS.C in Social Sciences, from the University of Bristol (1983); and his B.A. (honours) in Economics and Sociology from the University of Kent at Canterbury (1979). Stephen Small’s research is organized around the social scientific analysis of contemporary racial formations, and addresses links between historical structures and contemporary manifestations of racial formations in the United States and elsewhere in the African Diaspora. The importance of Black dialogues in the European academic sphere: An interview with UC Berkeley professor Stephen Small.
His latest book – 20 Questions and Answers on Black Europe – was published by Amrit Publishers, The Hague, in January 2018. It can be obtained on Amazon.
Abstract
Europe is made up of at least 46 nations, and a population of more than 770 million people. Black people of African descent are estimated at more than 7 million, with at least 90% of them in just 12 nations. Historically, the nations of Europe reveal highly divergent political, economic and ideological relationships with colonized African nations and the slave nations created across the Americas. How can we theorize the historical relationship of Sweden (and other Nordic nations) as constituent partners of Black Europe? And what are the striking similarities in the experiences of Black people in Sweden, as compared with the rest of the African Diaspora in Europe? Drawing on my recently published book, I define Nordic nations as ‘peripheral colonial beneficiaries’; and I introduce the ideas of ambiguous hyper-visibility, entrenched vulnerability, and irrepressible resistance and resilience to characterize these striking similarities. In this way, I highlight the links between past and present, and the inextricable race/gender institutions and ideologies that are central to the racial formation of Black Europe..

Hotet från ensamagerande terrorister ökar. Även i Sverige. Vad drev Rakhmat Akilov, Anton Lundin Pettersson, Peter Mangs och Taimour Abdulwahab att döda för att nå politiska mål? Vad får en människa att attackera ett flykting- boende, en moské, en synagoga eller en romsk boplats?
Heléne Lööw, Mattias Gardell och Michael Dahlberg-Grundberg har, på uppdrag av den Nationella samordnaren mot våldsbejakande extremism, kartlagt attackerna mot asylboenden, bedömt hotet från ”ensamvargar” och undersökt sociala medier som politiskt verktyg för våldspredikanter i Sverige. Det övergripande syftet har varit att belysa symbiosen mellan organiserad och oorganiserad politisk våldsbrottslighet.
”Den ensamme terroristen?” är en skakande och grundligt underbyggd redogörelse för den våg av dödligt politiskt våld som skruvat upp oron i landet. Hur ska vi förstå utvecklingen? Och är den ensamme terroristen verkligen ensam?
Seminariet inleds med att författarna presenterar boken och dess resultat. Presentationen följs upp med ett samtal kring de utmaningar ensamagerande extremister innebär för samhället och dess myndigheter.
Seminariet är ett samarrangemang mellan CEMFOR och Centrum för polisforskning, Uppsala universitet, samt Nationella samordnaren mot våldsbejakande extremism och Ordfront förlag.

Den 12 september 2017 presenterade Benjamin Raphael Teitelbaum sin nya bok Lions of the North: Sounds of the New Nordic Nationalism (Oxford University Press, 2018). I boken undersöker Teitelbaum den dynamiska kopplingen mellan musik och politik i den nordiska radikalnationalistiska miljön.
Homonationalism
Hur blev samhällets mest föraktade ett rosa kapital och en symbolisk maktfaktor. Genom intervjuer med queeraktivister, forskare och nationalistiska bögar tar boken upp hur kampen för hbtq-personers rättigheter får en instrumentell betydelse när nationalistiska rörelser i Europa brännmärker samhällets nya ”andra”: migranter, flyktingar och muslimska grupper.
